“Comic Books in the Library?!@#*” (1974)
Will Eisner was the first prominent person in
the comics field to urge the inclusion of comics in
libraries. As with many areas of the field, he was way
ahead of the pack. Today libraries and librarians
embrace graphic novels and the comics genre, and it is
one of their most popular genres, especially among
younger readers. But back in 1974, the notion of
putting comics in libraries was virtually unthinkable.
Four years before his own ground-breaking A
Contract with God, the book that kicked off the
graphic novel revolution, Eisner wrote a prescient
article for The School Library Journal (Oct.
1974) and illustrated with this historic drawing. Some
sharp-eyed Eisner fans may recognize the gray-toned
superhero as the heroic prototype Eisner inserted in
the first “underground” Spirit comic,
published a year and a half earlier.
Medium/Size/Condition: Brush, pen and ink on
Bristol board measuring 12 inches wide x 10 inches
high, which in turn has been glued to a heavy
illustration board measuring 10” x 12.25”. A portion
of the Bristol board is loose because of aging rubber
cement, and there are some unrelated cement stains on
the reverse, but the image is not affected. Otherwise
excellent condition.
