FRANK STACK (1937-)
a.k.a. Foolbert Sturgeon • Original comic
book art
“Hilarious Unpublished Souperman” (Early 1969?)
Frank
Stack in top form is one of the funniest cartoonists
on the planet, and here he’s in top form. Souperman
lands in the middle of a guns blazing fight between
anarchist-pinko-hippies and fascist-pig-cops. Each
side expects the pure at heart hero to side with them,
but he wants no part of this tussle. Forty years later
America remains more polarized than ever and neither
Souperman nor Superman is on hand to resolve things.
Unpublished, but probably intended for The New
Adventures of Jesus (Rip Off, 1969). Very hard
to find such vintage underground pages.
Medium/Size/Condition: Pen and ink on light
Bristol board measuring 9 inches wide x 11.75 inches
high. The art is drawn very close to the spiral bound
sketchbook top edge. A couple spots with white-out,
otherwise excellent condition.
Further reference: Most
comix historians regard Frank Stack as the very
first underground cartoonist (his
earliest Jesus comics way pre-date R. Crumb or
Gilbert Shelton).
Additional Stack art is available. Contact us
