WILL EISNER
(1917-2005) • Original Spirit art
June
11, 1950. Page 4 from “Sammy the Explorer”
Commissioner
Dolan (who
has been napping) and The
Spirit’s then-sidekick
and “explorer” Sammy are adrift on
a raft somewhere beyond the skyline of Central City.
Sammy’s joke telescope is of no help. Nice all-Eisner page
with no evidence of assistants. Strong inking and bold
flourishes throughout, especially panels 2 and 4. The
final panel is a great example of Eisner’s bird’s-eye view
and economic and expressionistic depiction of the ocean.
Medium/Size/Condition: Brush,
pen, ink and wash on Bristol board measuring 15 x 22
inches (38.1 x 52.8 cm). Lower left of 5th panel
(telescope) is a paste-up. Very slight use of white-out in
a couple of balloons, but otherwise excellent condition.
Zip-a-Tone on lens in 4th panel is
secure.
Further reference: Much
other Eisner art, plus out-of-print graphic novels,
Spirit comic books and magazines,
signed serigraphs,
his Famous
Cartoonist
Button, and numerous other
Eisner-related items are accessible from our sister

Krupp’s
