WILL EISNER
(1917-2005) • Original Spirit art
June
11, 1950. Page 5 from “Sammy the Explorer”
Police
Commissioner Eustace Dolan and The
Spirit’s then-sidekick Sammy are adrift on
a raft somewhere on the Atlantic Ocean outside Central
City as a violent storm erupts. All-Eisner art: no
evidence of help by assistants. Strong inking and an
effective portrayal of a storm, further underscoring
Eisner’s traditional mastery of rain and water.
Medium/Size/Condition: Brush,
pen, ink and wash on Bristol board measuring 15 x 22
inches (38.1 x 52.8 cm). Heavy scratching and application
of White-out in first two panels to emphasize explosive
sneeze balloon and rising waves. Excellent overall
condition.
Further reference: Much
other Eisner art, plus out-of-print graphic novels,
Spirit comic books and magazines,
signed serigraphs,
his Famous
Cartoonist
Button, and numerous other
Eisner-related items are accessible from our sister
store Steve
Krupp’s
Curio Shoppe. Just type his name (or The
Spirit) into our search bar.
