FRANK STACK. "Self-Promotional
Ad" (1979).
Foolbert Sturgeon,
the by-lined creator of Dorman's Doggie, Dr. Feelgood,
Jesus Comix, Amazon, etc. was in reality Professor
Frank Stack of the University of Missouri --Columbia fine
art faculty. The "serious" side of Professor Stack
was embodied in a book called Frank Stack: Etchings and
Lithographs, published by Second Wind Publications.
Foolbert/Stack ended his Dorman's Doggie
comic book (Rip Off Press, 1979) by including this self-reverential
advertisement on the inside back cover. Sure the last panel is
a more coupon, but it's hand-drawn coupon, and you get a rare
self-portrait of the fine artist (by the cartoonist), etchings
sizzling in an acid bath, and a guest appearance by
Pingy-Poo himself!
Provenance:
This original art is warranted to be from the artist's personal
collection (Stack is exclusively represented by this agency).
The art comes with a letter of authenticity upon request. See
"bio" section for information on Frank
Stack (a.k.a. Foolbert Sturgeon), one of the very
earliest and most important of the underground cartoonists.
Medium/size/condition/price: Drawn in pen & ink on white drawing paper
measuring 8 5/8 inches wide by 10 5/8 inches high. Some correctional
and textural white-out. No paste-ups. This page is evidently
something Stack personally liked and had on his drawing board
and/or bulletin board for quite a while, because there are
seven thumb-tack holes at the top center (well outside the matted
image area). The top of the art is hinge-mounted with archival
tape to a professionally cut mat measuring 16 inches wide x 20
inches high. $250.
