WILL EISNER (1917-2005) • Fagin the Jew
(2003) Page
29 (unpublished).
Eisner’s
next-to-last graphic novel was Fagin the Jew,
an examination of the villain in Charles Dickens' Oliver
Twist. Based on his own research into the
era and the original editions of Oliver Twist,
Eisner tells Fagin's own story and context, while also
portraying the prejudice, poverty and anti-Semitism
prevalent in much of classic literature. This page, for
reasons unknown, did not appear in the published book by
either Doubleday or Dark Horse.
Size/Medium/Condition:
In Fagin, Eisner utilized “wash,” diluted
India ink that allowed for a rich array of gray tones
alongside his dramatic black line art. In fact, on this
particular page, the bottom half is
entirely wash, with no hard black lines whatever.
The large original measures 14 by 17 inches on heavy
Bristol board. Excellent condition.
Provenance:
The Will Eisner estate is exclusively represented by the
Denis Kitchen Art Agency, an affiliate of Steve Krupp’s

be an authentic original created by Will Eisner, and
sold on behalf of his estate. Note: Image is © Will
