    DOUGLAS COMIX by many top underground cartoonists. 1972

    Record, publishing and film impresario Alan Douglas approached Art Spiegelman in 1971 to produce a 52-page underground comix style catalog. The result is an amazing stew of cartooning talent plugging musical talent. Spiegelman drew the cover, intro and lead story plugging his own Whole Grains book. Back cover calendar by Jay Lynch.

    The first half of the catalog is devoted to Douglas Books: Roger Brand on Getting Busted; Skip Williamson on the photographic compilation, Shots; Justin Green on The Essential Lenny Bruce; Dave Sheridan tackles Timothy Leary’s Jail Notes; Jim Osborne and Trina Robbins jam seamlessly on Out of the Closets: Voices of Gay Liberation; Jerry Kay does Dennis Hopper’s The Last Movie Caper: The Making and Unmaking of a Motion Picture; Bill Griffith illustrates Movie People at Work in the Business of Film; Rory Hayes fittingly takes on God Madness: an Anthology of Secret Lore; Spain Rodriguez does several pages on Jodorowsky’s El Topo: A Book of the Film; and an S. Clay Wilson pirates centerfold marks the halfway point!

    The 2nd half is devoted to Douglas Records: Malcolm X’s By Any Means Necessary is handled by Yossarian; a Lenny Bruce album is dissected by Jay Lynch; Gary Hallgren interprets Howard Wales & Jerry Garcia’s Hooteroll; Denis Kitchen does Mahavishnu John McLaughlin’s My Goal’s Beyond (while Lynch adds a McLaughlin “Fun Page”); John Thompson takes on Buddy Miles’ Devotion; the Cloud Comix crew does the music of El Flexo; Larry Todd and Jack Jackson separately present “This is Madness” by The Last Poets; Willy Murphy and Bobby London attempt to introduce Alexandro Jodorowsky’s films El Topo and Mantra Mantra. As if this isn’t enough, there are ads in the back for the major underground comix publishers drawn by Larry Rippee, Gilbert Shelton, Guy Colwell, R. Crumb and Kitchen. And then there’s still more: a JAM style recap ends the “catalog.”

    In spite of this stellar lineup of talent and subjects this catalog/comic is quite rare, because it wasn’t sold in head shops alongside regular undergrounds. Few collectors at the time ever saw the publication. It’s especially difficult to find in nice condition. Ours is like new and $300.
