HOWARD
CRUSE ORIGINAL ART
Title/date/description:
Untitled, Undated
Color Art: Mickey Spider & African Americans
We don’t know when this was created or what it was
done for, but it’s a beautiful example of Howard’s
exquisite COLOR art. Two seemingly dispart
subjects, drawn next to each other, perhaps
illustrations for a magazine article?
In the left panel an apparent comics fanboy is
exasperating his date who wants to dance. In the
right frame a man seems to be trying to convince
an older woman of something. What we can say
for certain is that these are wonderful originals,
with superb detail and shading
Size/medium/condition: 17.5 x
8.5 inches (44.4 x 21.6 cm).
Tempera & Ink on heavy Bristol board. Great
spotted texture on black man’s shirt and
expressions on all faces. Cruse at his best.
Excellent condition.
Provenance: Warranted to be
authentic and from the estate of Howard Cruse, which the
DKAA agency exclusively represents.
Further reference: Howard
Cruse (1944-2019) was an
American cartoonist best
known for humor and gay themes. First coming to
attention in the 1970s during the underground
comix movement with Barefootz,
he was the founding editor of Gay Comix in
1980, created the gay-themed strip Wendel during
the 1980s, and he reached a more mainstream audience
in 1995 with his masterwork Stuck
Rubber Baby (published in an anniversary edition
in 2020 by First Second).
We have art from Cruse’s full career. If you don’t see
what you’re looking for in this web gallery, contact

we can tell you if what you seek is in our larger
