WILL EISNER (1917-2005) • Original Spirit art
    “Thanksgiving Spirit, page 2” (1949)

This “explosive” page features one of The Spirit’s most cunning foes: Carrion, and his trusted vulture Julia, as pickpockets his way through Central City’s Thanksgiving parade and plots his next  “easy pickings.” Includes such Eisner images as a dock scene, aerial view (descending elevator) and underground tunnel. The penciling is still surprisingly visible on the actual original (too subtle to show here), which allows the owner of this original to see what was initially intended, especially in the word balloons. One notable balloon correction changes “Acie’s Parade” (too close to Macey’s and editor or WE felt?) to “Axie’s.” No Spirit but plenty of Carrion. Published November 20, 1949.

Medium/Size/Condition: Brush, pen and ink on Bristol board measuring 15 inches wide x 22 inches high. The blue Eisner studio rubber stamps for page # and date are at the top, and yellowing rubber cement residue where the Photostat of publication date and page at top and bottom are long-missing. There is also some glue residue between the 4th and 7th panels. Some selective White-out, and dirt on edges and reverse, not uncommon for originals of this vintage, but no paste-ups. Fine condition.

Further reference: Much other Eisner art, plus out-of-print graphic novels, Spirit comic books and magazines, signed serigraphs, his Famous Cartoonist Button, and numerous other Eisner-related items are accessible from our sister store Steve Krupp’s Curio Shoppe. Just type his name (or The Spirit) into our search bar.
