GRATEFUL DEAD COMIX No. 2 (1991)

One of the editorial frustrations publisher Denis Kitchen had with Grateful Dead Comix was the band's insistence on owning all copyrights (underground cartioonists customarily owned their own creations) and the band's resistance to the creation of new material (Kitchen thought interpretations of lyrics were very limiting). Kitchen and Jerry Garcia met in Chicago and agreed to make the comic more experimental. That resulted in #2's lead, "The Lille Story," about the band's problems during an early European tour in May 1972.

The story, provided by Garcia, and cover was drawn by the late Rand Holmes, who created Harold Hedd and contributed to many undergrounds like Snarf, Death Rattle, Bizzarre Sex and Slow Death. This contribution is one of Holmes' few comics to appear in color. Other features inclde: "Terrapin Station" (part 2 by Dan Steffan; "Cumberland Blues" by Tim Truman; and "Friend of the Devil" by surrealist Frank Gresham. A lively letters section begins this issue. The back cover features a color photograph of Jerry Garcia proudly holding a copy of Grateful Dead Comix #1. Printed on recycled paper with soy inks on a pollution-free web press. 8.5" x 11" format. Color throughout. Near mint. $12.00
