TIM BOXELL • Original “Day in the Lab” (1972) from Snarf #2  • A light moment with Dr. Frankenstein and Igor - FRAMED under glass **

Scanning note: framed art under glass will not scan, so digital photos are the only option for viewing.
    These are slightly grainy.  Apologies.

Before Tim Boxell went on to a successful Hollywood career in animation and film (see IMDb profile), he was a stalwart contributor to underground comix, where he sometimes worked under the nom de plume “Grisly” because of his often explicitly gruesome content. This implied Dr. Frankenstein page is a perfect example of his grisly subject matter salted with his strange sense of humor, hence it appeared in the 2nd issue of the long-running underground humor anthology, Snarf. He had a relatively short but distinguished career as an underground cartoonist before heading west to start a new career. Boxell’s art only rarely shows up in the market, so this is an infrequent opportunity to fill in a gap in a serious collection of underground art.

Medium/Size/Condition: Brush, pen and ink on white paper measuring 13.25” x 17.25 inches. Currently in a frame 14.75 x 18.75 inches. Overall fine condition. The title “A Day in the Lab” is applied with “press type” which is still fully intact. Signed (twice) and dated in lower right corner.

Provenance: This original has been in the collection of James “Jim” Kitchen since the early 1970s. It is inscribed in the lower right: “The very best to my friend Jim, “’Grisly’ Tim Boxell”

** Price: $400 Price includes frame and glass if desired, but note that shipping glass will increase the cost of shipping. If you'd prefer unframed, send us an email to quote a reduced shipping fee.
