WILL EISNER (1917-2005) • New York
Yankees/”Expression of Emotions” panels (2004/2008)
Will Eisner
wrote and illustrated three classic educational books
about the medium he devoted his life to: Comics &
Sequential Art (1985), Graphic
Storytelling (1996) and Expressive
Anatomy (2004). Eisner wrote and penciled
the latter before he died. Expressive Anatomy
was published posthumously, in 2008, by W.W. Norton
with the aid of Peter
Poplaski, a highly respected artist who had long
worked with Eisner on many of his Spirit comic
books, magazines (i.e. The Spirit #30
“jam” cover), and several graphic novel covers for
Kitchen Sink Press. This excellent example from Expressive Anatomy
depicts “The Expression of Emotions” using a just-fired
New York Yankee,
who can’t contain his feelings. The original art is on
vellum expertly traced from Eisner’s roughs. A sharp
photocopy of the roughs are included so that the new
owner can carefully compare the before & after.
Medium/Size/Condition:
The original panels are drawn with brush and ink on
vellum measuring 8 x 5.75 inches. There is some
white-out but the art is remarkably clean. The original
art comes with a photocopy of Eisner’s hand-scripted and
roughed out images.
Price: $300 for the lot of 2.
Provenance:
The Will Eisner estate is exclusively represented by the
Denis Kitchen Art Agency, an affiliate of Steve Krupp’s
Curio Shoppe and Gallery. This drawing is warranted to
be an authentic original created by Will Eisner, and
sold on behalf of his estate. Note: Image is © Will
