Terrific example of Beck's comic book work. He did a
series of "Cartoon
Cavalcades" pages and half-pages for various underground
titles and
publishers. This piece reflects the state of the
Soviet Union in
1980
and the fact that dissidents often ended up in psychiatric
wards. Beck
was a true pioneer whose published comix work pre-dates R.
Crumb's ZAP
and nearly every other artist in the field.
Medium: Pen & Ink on Bristol board. Dimensions:
15 1/2
x 10 7/8 inches. Signed and dated 1984 (the date he
sold
and personalized the art), but the actual creation was
1980 (see ©
date).
Condition: Some smudges on margins and LR date, some
white-out
corrections, but overall very good.
Provenance: From the collection of a friend of Beck's in
Southern
California. A one-owner original.
