PETER POPLASKI. Original BATMAN art (Lot of 2).
    “Batman Study” (circa 1990)

Nice composition of Batman throwing a punch at a pistol-wielding thug. This lot consists of two pieces: a preliminary study done in pencil and pen on vellum, and a finished drawing done in brush, pen and ink on Bristol board. The finished art is signed by Poplaski, lower right. The drawings are believed to be unpublished, but part of his work on Batman: The Dailies series in 1990-91.

Medium/Size/Condition: The finished drawing is done with brush, pen and ink on Bristol board measuring 8.5 x 11 inches. The sketch is done with pencil and ink on clear vellum measuring 9 x 12 inches. Both are in excellent condition.

About the Artist: Peter Poplaski is not the household word he deserves to be but he is highly respected among his peers, and is a consummate chameleon who can mimic virtually any art style. He created a series of definitive wraparound covers for several volumes of Batman: The Dailies; Batman: The Sunday Classics; Superman: The Dailies; and Superman: Sunday Classics, co-published by DC Comics and Kitchen Sink Press in the 1990s. More recently Poplaski is doing Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman covers for IDW and Dean Mullaney’s Library of American Comics, mimicking the styles of Wayne Boring, Curt Swan, Bob Kane and other artists associated with earlier incarnations of the characters. Poplaski has also created covers for Li’l Abner in Al Capp style, Flash Gordon in Alex Raymond style, Steve Canyon in Milton Caniff style, and even Gen of Hiroshima in Keiji Nakazawa style. Alan Moore tapped Poplaski to do a Tom Strong sequence in C.C. Beck’s Captain Marvel style. Poplaski’s originals are collected by a growing number of astute collectors, including Robert Crumb. Wearing his editor’s hat, Poplaski edited and assembled two definitive books on Crumb: The R. Crumb Handbook (MQP) and The R. Crumb Coffee Table Art Book (Little Brown and Kitchen Sink). Poplaski also art directed many Will Eisner, Harvey Kurtzman, Milton Caniff covers and books. Poplaski is currently working on the definitive history of Zorro, a subject for which he has no peer. His cover art at auction and in private sales in the US and Europe brings in the range of $1,500 to $5,000.
