PETER POPLASKI. Original SUPERMAN cover art (Lot of 2).
“Superman in World War II” (2013)

This beautiful front cover was created for SUPERMAN: Sunday Pages 1943-46 (IDW, 2014). It was is created in mixed media: the three-dimensional Superman logo, the sub-title, the Superman figure, and the diagonal stripe are drawn with conventional brush and ink. The background with WWII planes, explosions, and jungle foliage is drawn in “grease pencil” for a more subtle, muted background contrast and effect. One of Poplaski’s less-heralded talents is his top rank lettering and logo skills. So aside from the exquisite flying Superman figure, what is especially notable here is that ALL the LETTERING is ORIGINAL, an integrated part of the art— NOT stats or photocopies pasted on the art. The surface is smooth and uninterrupted by paste-ups. How often do you see THAT on a cover?!? It is very rare, and adds to the aesthetic appeal. The lot includes his color guide.

Medium/Size/Condition: The finished cover art measures 15” wide x 19” high on heavy Bristol board. Signed & dated 2013 in lower left corner. The lot includes Poplaski’s color guide, consisting of original color pencil colors on a photocopy of the finished art, measuring 17 x 11 inches. Both items are in excellent condition
