FRANK STACK. "Ping is One Wild
and Curly Guy!" (1990).
Readers of Stack's body of work know that
"Ping" is the hopelessly neurotic poodle otherwise
known as "Dorman's Doggie." Rip Off Press published
a one-shot Dorman's Doggie underground comic as early
as 1979, and short pieces about this odd couple appeared in other
comix. In 1990 Kitchen Sink Press published the
book collection called Dorman's Doggie. This original
drawing (sans lettering) appeared as the "book ends"
on both page 1 and the final page 80 of that collection, making
this one of the more definitive portraits of Ping.
Provenance:
This original art is warranted to be from the artist's personal
collection (Stack is exclusively represented by this agency).
The art comes with a letter of authenticity upon request. See
"bio" section for information on Frank
Stack (a.k.a. Foolbert Sturgeon), one of the very
earliest and most important of the underground cartoonists.
Size/medium/condition/price: Drawn in brush, pen and ink on a sheet on high-gloss
paper measuring 14 1/2 inches wide by 11 1/2 inches high. The
lower left corner above the lettering "Ping is" has
four parallel surface scratches (from a dog or cat?). There is
a half inch dent just left of the dog collar, a 1/8" brown
stain (coffee?) above Ping's head and light abrasions overall.
Those flaws noted, it is still a quite striking piece whose flaws
are not a serious distraction. The top of the art is hinge-mounted
with archival tape to a professionally cut mat measuring 20 inches
wide x 16 inches high.
