WILL EISNER (1917-2005) • Original art: Page 5 to “Election of Mr. Bowser” (November 9, 1947)

Action taking place at night in predominantly black panels may be regarded by some readers as a cartoonist’s “cheat technique,” but when Will Eisner employed such techniques they were part of his eye-catching story-telling technique. The clicking tock, the barely visible gun, the squeaky door, and the wild shots, yelps, and screams are used here for both dramatic and humorous effect, as the shaken Bonehead and the gang-that-couldn’t-shoot-straight is revealed in the final panel by The Spirit himself. From 1947, one of Eisner’s strongest years.

Medium/Size/Condition: Drawn with brush, pen and ink on Bristol board measuring 15 inches wide x 22 inches high. Eisner placed white tape at the very top and bottom of the page, presumably to cover the typical rubber cement stains of the title and page number placed there in 1947. Use of White-out, especially in the black panels for obvious effect, otherwise excellent condition.
