WILL EISNER (1917-2005) • Original Cover Art (lot of 3)
    “Spirit Magazine #41 cover” (1980)

This is a large and dramatic piece, suitable for framing. It is important to note that the left one-half is completely original art; the right half is Will Eisner’s limited edition plate created for the 1980 National Cartoonists Society Portfolio which Will seamlessly grafted to the original left side. Mounted on heavy illustration board. The new art is inked with bold brush, somewhat in contrast to the lighter rendering of the right plate. The new art features brooding thugs lurking in the cemetery, a chained skeleton and trademark Eisner broken architecture.

The overall piece is unusual in that the full primary cast is included: The Spirit, Commissioner Dolan, Ebony and Ellen Dolan. The lot includes two other items: a.) An original handwritten yellow note in pencil (affixed to an overlay with additional Eisner handwriting). The note is from Eisner to his publisher Denis Kitchen; and b.) A near mint copy of Spirit Magazine #41 (the very last in the series). The art framed with or next to the color printed wraparound would be especially striking on your home gallery wall.

Medium/Size/Condition: The left half only is brush and ink on light Bristol board measuring 12 inches wide x 15 inches high, mounted with careful seaming to the portfolio plate of a similar size. The two pieces are jointly mounted with white tape on on a heavy dark board measuring 22.75 x 16.25 inches wide. Excellent condition.

[No-interest installment payments can be arranged on high ticket items.]
