    179. Cadillacs & Dinosaurs: Jack (1993). No. 3 in a set of 7 C&D buttons.

"Cadillac" Jack Tenrec heads the Mechanics, a small group in City in the Sea who retain the largely lost mechanical knowledge from earlier human generations. Mechanics are essentially the "priests" of the new order, holding secret knowledge. Tenrec is thus the effective leader of The City in the Sea (known hundreds of years earlier as New York City. See button #181).

Jack blames book knowledge for the ecological disasters leading to earth's plight. This belief and his rigid interpretation of natural law (allowing no living creature to be killed) puts him in direct conflict with his own tribe's pragmatic farmers (whose farmlands are trampled by shivats), and governor, as well as dangerous poachers and the philosophically and culturally differing Wassoon tribe (see button #180), represented by Hannah Dundee (see button #178). An enigmatic, flawed but still heroic figure, Jack's nickname comes from the vintage '53 El Dorados he restores and modifies

This button series, designed by Ray Fehrenbach, was among the items (including boxed candy bars) created by Kitchen Sink Press itself shortly before it ended its Wisconsin phase, moved to Massachusetts and merged with Tundra Publishing.

    1.25 inch diameter. $3.00

One note, for serious button collectors, you may want to read the KSP BUTTON TEXT which explains the numbering systems for identifying the various buttons produced over the last 30 years, or see the COMPLETE KSP BUTTON LIST. The list is VERY long, so be patient while it loads.
