LI'L ABNER: The Frazetta Years, Vol. 3 (1958-59) by Al Capp.
Edited and Annotated by Denis Kitchen.

Collected for the first time ever --- two full years of gorgeous FULL-COLOR SUNDAY PAGES by Al Capp, many penciled by assistant Frank Frazetta, who went on to his own fame after leaving Capp's studio in the early '60s.

World class satirist Capp's pen was as sharp as ever in the late '50s. His prescient targets in this 3rd volume include: included the Univac Computer (when computers filled an entire room), the Kennedy clan, outré women's fashions, and alien invaders. In this full-color hardcover album you'll see...

    · The first and only "reverse" Sadie Hawkins Day race!
    · How to pronounce Joe Btfsplk's name!
    · Li'l Abner and Honest Abe pursue careers as... cartoonists!?!
    · The search for Christopher Columbus's long johns.
    · Famous lothario Adam Lazonga returns to Dogpatch to pass on his unique love-making secrets to hand-picked successor Tiny Yokum.
    · And, in what is sure to be a feminist favorite, dutiful wife Daisy Mae gets "sick in the head" and becomes "uppity"!!

Virtually all the stories are annotated in the back of the volume, often with bonus illustrations, by Abner/Capp expert Denis Kitchen. He identifies the long-forgotten subjects of Capp's satirical barbs, the political and cultural context, explains fifty-year old jokes for young 'uns reading, points out the sexual innuendo Capp loved to insert in the strip, and similar bits of esoterica for serious fans.

Other characters in this volume include General Bullmoose, Bassett the Parrot, Cousin Weakeyes, the dreaded Turnip Termites, Sary & Cary Grunt, Mammy & Pappy Yokum, Moonbeam McSwine, Hairless Joe, Lonesome Polecat and Soft-Hearted John.

None of these stories overlap with the black & white dailies collections compiled earlier by Kitchen Sink Press. Al Capp's color Sunday stories were completely separate continuities.

120 page hard cover book for only $18.95
