BIZARRE DETECTIVE Card Set (1992). (NO BOX)

This startling set features deliciously lurid covers from detective pulp magazines of the 1930s and 40s. Spicy Mystery, Dime Detective Magazine, Spicy Detective, Ten Detective Aces, Greater Gangster Stories Gun Molls, Vice Squad Detective and Romantic Detective didn't feature your everyday detective stories. In fact, Vice Squad Detective was regarded as so salacious (it dared to feature bare nipples) that it was siezed by authorities and only three copies are known to survive! As these covers suggest, the crimes involved otherworldly ghouls, twisted mad scientists, unusually sadistic psychopaths, devious Asian overlords and the kind of criminals and misanthropes that would make Ed Gein look mild-mannered.

Comics and pulp historian Bill Blackbeard writes the backs of these cards, putting the stories into historic, artistic and literary context. Contributing writers to these pulps included Raymond Chandler, Johnston McCulley and Erle Stanley Gardner and excerpts are featured. Cover artists include Walter Baumhofer, H. J. Ward, John Howitt, Jim Parkhurst, Jerome Rosen, William Reusswig, Rafael DeSoto, Enoch Bolles, Norman Saunders, Tom Lovell and Chris Schaare. What's abundantly clear is that no one paint covers like these anymore.

These cards were originally published more than a decade ago as a boxed set by Kitchen Sink Press. What we are offering here is the full 36-card set from the first printing minus only the box. Long out of print and a bargain at $9.95
