KITCHEN SINK PRESS 20th
ANNIVERSARY Trading Card Set (1988). (NO BOX)
[Also known as "Kitchen Sink
Cards" from title on card backs.]
To celebrate its twentieth
anniversary of publishing Kitchen Sink Press
(founded in 1969) issued an eclectic set of 36
trading cards in late 1988. These were distributed in
an unusual manner, explaining why they are difficult
to find, especially in full sets. The cards were not
sold. They were shipped to
cooperating comics retailers at the pace of several
cards per month throughout late '88 and the
anniversary year. Retailers were expected, in turn, to
freely pass the cards along to appropriate customers,
but were given no incentive other than brand loyalty.
Given the vagaries of such a voluntary system, it's a
wonder that any fans in 1989 assembled a full
set.
The set promoted existing and
upcoming projects with card text by Dave Schreiner
(author of Kitchen Sink Press: The First 25 Years).
The publishing house had a decidedly diverse line,
combining underground comix, graphic novels
and classic strip reprints. As a result, this
is likely to be the only card set ever produced
that combines the likes of Robert Crumb and
Milton Caniff. It is impossible to sum up this
offbeat set in a single paragraph, so we are listing
and describing the cards in numeric order below. (If
you need individual cards to complete your set, we may
be able to help you at $ 2.00 /card (inquire by
emailing our ordering dept) $25.00 for
full set.
