WILL EISNER (1917-2005) • The Building
(1987) Page
27 (lot of 2)
Gilda meets
her lover Benny,
the poet, and tells him she is marrying Irving, her less
exciting but financially stable choice, from Eisner’s
1987 graphic novel The Building.
This lot includes two
Eisner originals: the inked published page, and
the corresponding preliminary pencil drawing, showing
how Will followed through on his first conception.
Medium/Size/Condition:
The final inked page is drawn with brush, pen and
ink on 11 x 14-inch Bristol board, with considerable
“bleed” on the edges that would have been trimmed off in
the printed book.
The blue and black pencil preliminary is drawn on
lightweight white paper 6.25 x 9.5 inches. Note that
Eisner’s pencil indicates he was going to head the page,
“Soon it became more noticeable,” but decided such
lettering would be superfluous in the final rendering.
Both originals are in excellent condition.
Price: $1,600 for the
2-piece lot
Provenance:
The Will Eisner estate is exclusively represented by the
Denis Kitchen Art Agency, an affiliate of Steve Krupp’s
