Frank Stack Original Art: Interviewing the Interviewer pg.1

FRANK STACK. "Interviewing the Interviewer" (1999).

Collaborative effort with tortured writer Harvey Pekar for an issue of American Splendor, the comic that was turned into a critically acclaimed film in 2003. This "splash page" depicts Pekar twice, along with a lovely opening shot of his home, along with the interrogating writer who inspires the title of this story.

See "bio" section for information on Frank Stack (a.k.a. Foolbert Sturgeon), one of the very earliest and most important of the underground cartoonists.

Size/medium/condition/price: Drawn in brush, pen and ink on blue-lined Bristol board measuring 11 3/4 inches wide by 17 1/2 inches high. Only the second panel is drawn directly onto the Bristol board. The hand-lettered title/credits, panel one, the first two voice balloons and both bottom panels are drawn on other sheets of paper and pasted on to the Bristol board. Evidently the proportion was off (or had to be adjusted when Stack added the title & credits) because roughly an inch of the bottom panels are covered by a semi-transparent paste-over, which still permits Stack's original inked extensions to be seen. These latter extension/paste-overs are currently covered by the mat edge. Top of the art is hinge-mounted with archival tape to a professionally cut mat measuring 16 inches wide x 20 inches high.
