WILL EISNER GRAPHIC NOVEL ORIGINAL ART:
WILL EISNER. Title/date/description: Preliminary drawing and finished art for the 6th
page of "Smellbound," which is page 46 of City People
Notebook (1989); a 3-piece total lot.
Will
Eisner made some subtle changes between his initial layout and
finished page, but they are overall quite close. However, did
Will forget Armando's mustache in panel 3? Would look very nice
when framed together, perhaps with the pencil and a gray-toned
published page flanking the larger inked original.
Size/medium/condition: The underlying roughs of the preliminary drawing
are in blue pencil with tighter black pencil lines on top, on
8.5 x 11 inch white paper. The final art is drawn in pen, brush
& ink on an 11 x 14 inch Bristol board, with some blue pencil
guide lines still visible. Also pictured here is Eisner's transparent vellum overlay on which he has
indicated in ink, spots of White-Out and sections of red mask,
the areas where "20% B.D." (Benday) gray tones were
to be incorporated into his printed image. (See the published
City People page for the combined effect). The aging red
mask displays some cracking and its low-tack adhesive has permitted
a small piece or two of the mask to fall off, however this in
no way effects the two separate pieces of original art. There
are small pieces of white tape with registration marks on the
extreme corners, well outside the image area, and small applications
of White-Out. Eisner's inventory rubber stamp and handwritten
"City People" title is on the reverse side.
Excellent condition. Price: $1,650
(lot of 3 pieces)
Provenance: Warranted
to be from the Will Eisner estate, which this agency exclusively
represents. Comes with signed Bill of Sale.
