JAMES
O’BARR • Splash page “Velocity” from his famous graphic
novel The Crow (1980s)
The Crow is one of the best-selling graphic novels of all
time (approaching one million copies worldwide) and it was
made into the highly successful film starring Brandon Lee,
who was tragically killed during the filming. The Crow
continues to be a perennial seller and creator James O’Barr
remains a highly popular artist on the international
convention circuit. His published Crow art is seldom seen in
the market, and this page is an exceptional example.
The wordless full page (the splash to the “Velocity”
chapter) contains wonderful architectural detail and
prominently features the title character. A beautiful
original page from O’Barr’s key creation that would be
stunning framed and on a wall.
Medium/Size/Condition: Created with brush,
pen, ink and Zip-a-Tone on a large sheet of Bristol board
measuring 14 x 22 inches. There is a crease running parallel
to the top edge about 2.5” from the top from being folded at
one point long ago. There is a small ¼ inch tear on the
right side near the Crow’s shoulder. Very minor creases in
the corners. Otherwise fine condition.
Provenance: From the collection of James
Kitchen.
