Will
Eisner’s Incredible Facts, Amazing Statistics and
Monumental Trivia. Page 36 (1974)
Will
Eisner at his kinetic best! In the early 70s,
Will Eisner tried his hand as a humor cartoonist and
puts his all for that approach into this page from Incredible
Facts, Amazing Statistics and Monumental Trivia.
The three panels on this page riff on early 70s health
research, providing springboards for Will to play with
sight humor and over-the-top expressive acting in his
figure work. The observational humor in the street noise
panel anticipates his efforts in New York and
City People Notebook, while also capturing a
slice of life in this iconic era. Eisner is clearly
enjoying himself with the drawings on this
page. The detailing is exquisite.
Inspired by
underground comix, newsstand humor magazines and book
collections of humor cartoons Eisner wrote, illustrated
and published a series of humor publications prior to
developing the Graphic Novel format in 1978. This page
is from the [first?] entry in that series, which would
eventually become known as "Gleeful Guides.”
