FRANK STACK
(1937-) a.k.a. Foolbert Sturgeon •
Original comic book art
“Amazons battle scene” (1972)
Frank Stack’s oeuvre varies a great
deal, from pen and ink cartoons, to etchings, to
chalk drawings, nudes, and chalk art to
watercolor paintings. Among his comic book
there is comparable range, from his sardonic
Jesus stories to hilarious Dorman’s Doggie
strips and the psychological musings of Dr.
Feelgood to his totally different Amazon
Comics, featuring figurative art and
nothing-funny fight scenes from Greek mythology,
like this example. This comic takes the historic
man vs. woman battles to a quite literal level.
Lovely cross-hatching and solid sense of human
physiology (from a man who taught figure drawing
for decades at the University of Missouri).
Medium/Size/Condition: The Pen and ink
panel tiers are lightly glued to light Bristol
board measuring 11 inches wide x 14 inches high.
Small separation crack on the Zip-a-Tone over
horse in 4th panel, otherwise very fine
condition.
Further reference: Most
comix historians regard Frank Stack as the very
first underground cartoonist (his
earliest Jesus comics way pre-date R. Crumb or
Gilbert Shelton).
