“Our Cancer Year” (1993)
Frank Stack illustrated the
painfully honest autobiographical 1994
graphic novel Our Cancer Year with
Harvey Pekar (1939-2010) and Joyce
Brabner. This is page 187, showing
Pekar’s wife Brabner confronting him about
his self-pity. Beautiful rendering and a
classic collaboration between two masters
of the graphic novel genre.
Medium/Size/Condition: Pen and ink
on light Bristol board measuring 11 inches
wide x 14 inches high. Top edge is
carefully torn from a spiral bound
sketchbook. Balloons are original put
pasted on art. Excellent condition.
Further reference: Most
comix historians regard Frank Stack as the very
first underground cartoonist (his
earliest Jesus comics way pre-date R. Crumb or
Gilbert Shelton).
