FRANK STACK
(1937-) a.k.a. Foolbert Sturgeon •
Original Watercolor drawing “Before the
Bath” (1994)
Frank Stack’s oeuvre varies a great
deal, from pen and ink cartoons, to etchings, to
chalk drawings, nudes, and chalk art to
watercolor paintings. Here’s a lovely nude
done is soft color and delicate but sure line.
“Before the Bath” shows an entirely different
side to comic book fans: the art professor who
taught figure drawing for decades at the
University of Missouri. Signed in lower right
corner and dated on reverse (3/24/94).
Medium/Size/Condition: Marker and
watercolor on deckle-edge watercolor paper
measuring 9.5 inches wide x 13 inches high.
Excellent condition.
Further reference: Most
comix historians regard Frank Stack as the very
first underground cartoonist (his
earliest Jesus comics way pre-date R. Crumb or
Gilbert Shelton).
Additional Stack art is available. Contact us
for further details. Additionally, Stack items
(out of print books and postcards) can be found in Steve
Krupp’s Curio Shoppe. Just type Frank Stack in

represented by the Denis Kitchen Art Agency, an
