CRUSE ORIGINAL ART
Title/date/description:
“BAREFOOTZ” — The Roaches
Redecorate (1975)
While Barefootz is on the phone —and the one-sided
dialogue he has with Dolly is hilarious— the resident
cockroaches have surprised him with a redecorated
fridge.
Size/medium/condition: 14 x 20
inches (35.6 x 50.8 cm). Ink on
Bristol board with Zip-a-Tone. The top panel is a
Photostat with white tape along edges holding stat in
place. Otherwise excellent condition. Terrific use of
Zip-a-Tone to enhance the activity noise in the 3rd
panel, to emulate sound waves in the “Surprise!”
panel, and to effect the glow of pride as the roaches
await compliments from their resident human. Signed in
final panel.
Provenance: Warranted to be
authentic and from the estate of Howard Cruse, which the
DKAA agency exclusively represents.
Further reference: Howard
Cruse (1944-2019) was an
American cartoonist best
known for humor and gay themes. First coming to
attention in the 1970s during the underground
comix movement with Barefootz,
he was the founding editor of Gay Comix in
1980, created the gay-themed strip Wendel during
the 1980s, and he reached a more mainstream audience
in 1995 with his masterwork Stuck
Rubber Baby (published in an anniversary edition
in 2020 by First Second).
We have art from Cruse’s full career. If you don’t see
