HOWARD
CRUSE ORIGINAL ART - LOT of 2
Title/date/description:
“Wendel” 2-page Duncan
Break-Up story (1989)
Sterno is experiencing ever
withdrawal symptoms after breaking up with his
super-buff boyfriend Duncan. His pals,
including Wendel Cyril, and Ollie,
but especially take-charge Tina, force
Sterno to pay attention as Tina fries an egg (a
parody of the once ubiquitous public service TV
commercial about "your brain on drugs”). The tactic
gets through to him! These ongoing “Wendel” strips
that ran in The Advocate were so well
done!
Size/medium/condition: 16 x 21.25
inches (40.6 x 54 cm). Ink (brush
& Rapidograph) on Bristol board. Excellent
condition. These are quite large originals, and
impressive in detail. Cruse was a master of
cross-hatching and spotting his blacks and tones.
Howard’s hand-lettered contact information is on the
back of each page. Signed in the last panel of 2nd
page.
Price: $650 for
the pair. Sold as a set only.
Provenance: Warranted to be
authentic and from the estate of Howard Cruse, which the
DKAA agency exclusively represents.
Further reference: Howard
Cruse (1944-2019) was an
American cartoonist best
known for humor and gay themes. First coming to
attention in the 1970s during the underground
comix movement with Barefootz,
he was the founding editor of Gay Comix in
1980, created the gay-themed strip Wendel during
the 1980s, and he reached a more mainstream audience
in 1995 with his masterwork Stuck
Rubber Baby (published in an anniversary edition
in 2020 by First Second).
We have art from Cruse’s full career. If you don’t see
