Two years before his groundbreaking graphic
novel A Contract with God, Will
Eisner was still experimenting with the storytelling
format. One of his lesser known endeavors, even to
serious Eisner and Spirit fans, was a pocket book with
a rather cumbersome title: The Spirit’s
Casebook of True Haunted Houses & Ghosts,
published by Tempo/Grosset & Dunlop in 1976.
This atypical Eisner cover depicts the ghostly figure
of a beautiful female ghost with no hands hovering
over a desolate house on a cliff’s edge. The paperback
is so hard to find that even well-read copies bring
$50 from dealers, and pristine copies almost never
show up. Included with this original art is
a near mint copy of the book: Eisner’s own file
copy.
Size/medium/condition: 15
x 13 inches (38 x 33 cm). Acrylic
paint on thick illustration board. Signed and dated
lower right. Excellent condition.
