WILL EISNER
• Original cover art (lot of 2)
“Moby Dick painting” (1998)
Will Eisner adapted several literary
classics as short graphic novel editions for
young readers. These included Cervantes’ Don
Quixote (The Last Knight), the
African legend Sundiata, and The
Princess and the Frog. The most ambitious
undertaking was Herman Melville’s dense Moby
Dick. For the front cover of NBM’s
English language edition, Eisner created two
versions. A similar version with the obsessed Captain
Ahab in closer view was used as the final
cover, and this U.S. alternative became NBM’s
title page frontispiece. But this original was
the front cover on the Brazilian edition of Moby
Dick, and possibly other international
editions. The lot includes the original painting
plus a limited edition of the hardcover book NBM
edition numbered and signed by Will Eisner.
Medium/Size/Condition: Watercolor and
ink on heavy, textured watercolor paper
measuring 10 inches wide x 14 inches high. A
2-inch tear in the lower middle, well outside
any matting area, was taped from the back by
Eisner’s studio long ago. Otherwise
excellent condition.
Further reference: Much other Eisner art, plus
out-of-print graphic novels, Spirit comic books and
magazines, signed serigraphs, his Famous Cartoonist
Button, and numerous other Eisner-related items are
accessible from Steve
Krupp’s Curio Shoppe.
Provenance: The Will Eisner estate is
exclusively represented by the Denis Kitchen Art
Agency, an affiliate of Steve Krupp’s Curio Shoppe and
Gallery. This drawing is warranted to be an authentic
original created by Will Eisner, and sold on behalf of
his estate. |
