WILL EISNER (1917-2005) • Original Spirit art

June 11, 1950. Page 6 from “Sammy the Explorer.”

Too many collectors in our view are obsessed with having comic art pages that feature the “hero” and fight scenes and beautiful women. We have no problem with those themes, but also appreciate pages that are just aesthetically great. Here’s a beautiful page of Commissioner Dolan and Sammy (The Spirit’s then-sidekick) enduring a fierce storm on a flimsy raft off the shore of Central City. This is all-Eisner art: no evidence of help by assistants. Eisner’s mastery of water and waves is apparent as the pair of neophyte sailors are drenched by succeeding waves. The ghostly face of Sammy behind water in panel 2 and the two lying on the beach as the water recedes are particularly strong examples of a master cartoonist.

Medium/Size/Condition: Brush, pen, ink and wash on Bristol board measuring 15 x 22 inches (38.1 x 52.8 cm). Heavy scratching and application of White-out in first two panels to emphasize explosive sneeze balloon and rising waves. Excellent overall condition.

Further reference: Much other Eisner art, plus out-of-print graphic novels, Spirit comic books and magazines, signed serigraphs, his Famous Cartoonist Button, and numerous other Eisner-related items are accessible from our sister store Steve Krupp’s Curio Shoppe. Just type his name (or The Spirit) into our search bar.

Provenance: The Will Eisner estate is exclusively represented by the Denis Kitchen Art Agency, an affiliate of Steve Krupp’s Curio Shoppe and Gallery. This drawing is warranted to be an authentic original created by Will Eisner, and sold on behalf of his estate. Note: Image is © Will Eisner Studios, Inc.
