JOEL BECK (1944-1999).
2-piece Lot. "Fantasy Round-Up."
Medium: Pen,
brush and ink on bristol board. Dimensions: Visible art
9.5 inches wide x 7 5/8 inches high, with bristol board outside
image area appanently glued to the back of a professionally cut
blue-gray mat measuring 13.5" x 11.75". Not signed
or dated, but believed, from the style and date of other
items in consignor's collection to be drawn in the late 1960s.
There
is a second piece in the Lot consisting of a Photostat of the
previously described art which is mounted on a heavy silver-backed
card stock. (click image at right) The rubber cement is
loose on the top half. The Photostat itself is a reproduction
but Joel Beck visibly retouched it with ink and white-out , particularly
on the left rider and kangaroo-like creature, so that the image
in this area is darker, with higher contrast. The original drawing
was published in a portfolio, but this variation
suggests that the retouched image may have been published elsewhere.
A plate from the portfolio is available elsewhere in this
web gallery.
Condition:
The original inked drawing itself is in excellent condition but,
as noted, the edges outside the image area are glued to the mat.
The Photostat is slightly darkened from age and is curling at
the top where the original rubber cement has dried up.
Provenance:
Certified to be from the collection of a childhood friend of
Beck.
