JOEL BECK
(1944-1999). "Cartoon
Cavalcade presents HIGH MOMENTS IN HUMAN
RIGHTS!'" (1980)
Wonderful example of Beck's political comic book work. He
did a series
of satirical "Cartoon Cavalcades" pages and half-pages for
various
underground titles and publishers. This piece comments on
gays in the
military decades
before the "don't ask don't tell" policy was finally
eliminated in
2011. Also sympathetic observations on Ralph Nader,
capital punishment,
slavery and native Americans. An insightful and bitter
commentary on
human rights in America as of 1980. Beck was a true
pioneer whose
published comix work pre-dates R. Crumb's ZAP and nearly
every other
artist in the field.
Medium: Pen & Ink on Bristol board. Dimensions:
17 3/4
x 11 1/2 inches. Signed and dated 1984 (the date he
sold
and personalized the art), but the actual creation was
1980 (see ©
date in 4th panel).
Condition: "Cartoon Cavalcades" Photostat is missing in
opening panel (we can supply a copy from another if you
wish to
restore). Some rubber cement stain in opening panel and
ink smudges on
margins. Overall fair to good condition, but not unusual
for Beck art
(a classic starving cartoonist, he lived in a garret for
many years)..
Provenance: From the collection of a friend of Beck's in
Southern
California. A one-owner original.
