FOX FIVER PATRIOT No. 71 with 2-color Denis Kitchen cover (October 23, 1979).

"Trick or Treat Cover!" Denis Kitchen co-owned this central Wisconsin alternative news weekly and often created the covers. Halloween covers were his favorite topics because he could more easily get away with dtrange imagery. The tall ghoul in the doorway was inspired by a 1950s Al Feldstein horror cover for E.C. Comics and astute readers will see that Kitchen signed his name in Feldstein's style as a subtle homage. Note that the short goblin is placing a worm in the boy's Trick or Treat bag. The same two kids show up for next year's Patriot Halloween cover (see #94).

Keep in mind that these covers were drawn long before the computer era and the color is meticulously hand-cut with Zipatone and overlays. Kitchen's covers for this regional publication are generally unknown to underground comix collectors where he is best known as a cartoonist and publisher. This issue also contains a full-page "Wonder Wart-Hog" by Gilbert Shelton and vustom local ads and logos by both Kitchen and Peter Poplaski.

    Format: 28-page 11.5 x 17" tabloid style newspaper, folded to 8.5" x 11.5" cover size.

Condition: Near Mint uncirculated copy with only faint aging typical of old newsprint.
