56. [Paul Whiteman trademark] (1975).
Art by Leslie Cabarga. Paul Whiteman
was a very popular big band leader in the 1930s. His distinctive
78 rpm record labels featured this distinctive caricature of
his pudgy, mustachioed face. Cabarga (best known for his definitive
renderings of Betty Boop) is also a musician and a published
expert on '30s trademarks, which explains his fascination on
several levels for this image. This button, not surprisingly,
didn't sell well in Kitchen Sink's market, where the only 78
rpm records most of its long-haired customers ever saw was Crumb's
brief Ordinary Record revival. But more lately old record collectors
have discovered it.
2.25 inch diameter. $5.00
One note, for serious button collectors,
you may want to read the KSP
BUTTON TEXT which explains the numbering systems for
identifying the various buttons produced over the last 30 years,
or see the COMPLETE
KSP BUTTON LIST. The list is VERY long, so be patient
while it loads.
