RAIN by
ROLF F. STARK and MARLENE STEVENS (1993).
When Teen-Age Mutant Ninja Turtles
creator Kevin Eastman founded Tundra Publishing with
part of his Turtle fortune, he quickly acquired an eclectic list
of graphic novel properties. Some have stood the test of time,
but one that most observers shook their heads at was Rain.
Eastman saw it as Tundra's version of Art Spiegelman's
Pulitzer prize-winning Maus. Many others saw it as muddled
and amateurishly drawn, including Denis Kitchen. When
he merged his company with Tundra in 1993, he insisted
that this Rain collection be published with the retired
Tundra imprint and not his own.
But if you agree with Neil Gaiman,
who called Rain "Brave, powerful, raw and hurtfully
honest. It's being dragged, unwilling and friendless, through
somebody else's life; it's as reader friendly as a mugging, as
harsh as an axe murder. And it's one of the most demanding and
exciting new comics of the '90s" or Frank Miller,
who called Rain "a punch in the stomach... Powerful!"...then
you'll want to snap of one of the handful of copies from Kitchen's
archives. 6 3/4 x 10" 216 pages.
NM/Mint condition.
