FABULOUS
FURRY FREAK BROTHERS #1. Gilbert Shelton. 1971.
(11th printing). Rip Off Press.
The best-selling underground comix title was not the
better-known Zap or Mr. Natural but Gilbert Shelton’s
Furry Freak Brothers, the hirsute zonked out trio many
of us thought was the counterculture’s answer to the
Marx Brothers. This fat (64 pages) first Freak Brothers
collection, like its sequels, was reprinted over and
over and over, very early on passing one million copies
in print.
The brothers were Freewheelin’ Frank, Phineas, and Fat
Freddy. Shelton, who got his professional start in
Harvey Kurtzman’s Help! Magazine in the early 60s) was
consistently funny, never politically correct, and an
amazing draftsman. Early Freak Brothers printings are
hard to find because copies were passed around dorm
rooms, communes, and pads over and over till they fell
apart.
This is a 11th printing (60 cent cover price). Very
close to like new. $20
