DOPE COMIX #1 (1978).
The first of a 5-issue underground comix
series focusing on drugs. Each contributing cartoonist was encouraged
to deal with drug experiences, both good and bad. Great Leslie
Cabarga cover in his '30s "Fleischer Brothers style,"
with an evil pusher spider force-feeding a joint to a student
bug strapped to a barber chair as a "B-Man" intervenes!
(A large poster version of this classic cover is also
available.) Other contributors: Steve Stiles (science
fiction pulp parody), Dan Steffan (drug mules and LSD),
Sharon Rudahl (hash brownies), Joel Beck
(Santa delivers dope), Leonard Rifas (TV as an
opiate), Doug Hansen (Nemo parody "Little Bungo in
Reeferland"), and Howard Cruse ("Big
Marvy's First Toke"). Also included is a reprint of the
extremely rare 1972 underground mini The Great Marijuana Debate
featuring alternating pages by Kim Deitch and Denis
Kitchen (pro) and Jay Lynch and
Peter Poplaski
(con). Finally, a back cover by Kitchen. Published by Kitchen
Sink Press. First printing. NM/Mint.
