page from 1974’s Incredible Facts, Amazing
Statistics and Monumental Trivia taps into the
paranoid Watergate zeitgeist with a paranoia page on
Federal Surveillance that captures the shadowy sense of
eyes watching everywhere. The more things change, the
more they stay the same!
Inspired by
underground comix, newsstand humor magazines and book
collections of humor cartoons Eisner wrote, illustrated
and published a series of humor publications prior to
developing the Graphic Novel format in 1978. This page
is from the [first?] entry in that series, which would
eventually become known as "Gleeful Guides."
Size/Medium/Condition: Pen
and ink with collage elements. The originalon clear
vellum measures 8 by 10 inches, glued on to
heavyillustration board measuring 10b x 13 inches.
Slight background yellowing from ancient rubber cement.
But the linework is crisp, clean and uncompromised.
