HARVEY KURTZMAN and WILL
ELDER. Original GOODMAN BEAVER art.
“Goodman Underwater,” page 76. (1962)
In this story Harvey Kurtzman mixes a parody
of TV’s then-popular “Sea Hunt” series
starring Lloyd Bridges with Cervantes’
“Don Quixote.” As Kurtzman put it, “Lloyd
Bridges [as Mike Nelson] had this underground world
that he’d adventured through. The series was, in
effect, a writer’s fantasy... Just as Don Quixote’s
world was a fantasy, populated by dragons that were,
in actuality, windmills. Bridges and Quixote both
fought windmills.” In this page Goodman Beaver and
Mike Nelson grapple with Effie, Nelson’s
secretary/assistant, whom he mistakenly took for a
Soviet spy on the prior page. Once again a tour de
force of Kurtzman’s layout and Will Elder’s
masterful inking and cross-hatching, replete with
trademark chicken fat sight gags. Remarkable pen work.
Medium/Size/Condition: Pen and ink on heavy
illustration board measuring 8.25 inches wide x 11 5/8
inches high. Some marginal pencil marks, masking tape,
Scotch tape residue, registration mark (for overlay)
and grease pencil numbers from the period. Otherwise
excellent condition. The art also includes Elder’s
separate acetate overlay, on which he blocked, in red
marker, the areas in which the publishers were to add
gray tone in all editions.

reference: For more details on Goodman’s
“sex change” transformation see Denis
