209. Freak Brothers
Munchie Bars [Blue Frank] (1997).
Legendary underground cartoonist Gilbert
Shelton, creator of The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers,
licensed his archetypal hippie stoners to Kitchen Sink Konfections,
a division of Kitchen Sink Press. In 1997, following up on the
success of its R. Crumb-designed Devil Girl Choco-Bars,
KSK produced three flavors of boxed Freak Brothers candy dubbed
"Munchie Bars," a not-so-subtle reference to "the
munchies" (a slang expression for the chocolate craving
often experienced by marijuana users). Six different images (two
of each brother) were created by Shelton and his long-time associate
Paul Mavrides for the promotional buttons pictured here.
Button #209 has color art identical to
#204 and 204-A (all feature a laid-back Freewheeling Frank
facing right). The only difference is a blue rim.
1.25" diameter. $4.00
One note, for serious button collectors,
you may want to read the KSP
BUTTON TEXT which explains the numbering systems for
identifying the various buttons produced over the last 30 years,
or see the COMPLETE
KSP BUTTON LIST. The list is VERY long, so be patient
while it loads.
