CREATURES FROM THE SUBCONSCIOUS, the newest collection of unusual art by underground comix pioneer DENIS KITCHEN, features his unique surrealistic “chipboard” drawings. Drawn without pencil prelims or any aforethought, the spontaneous images are created on the unforgiving pulpy surface of chipboard, the stiff backer board on legal pads and similar.

The wide variety of imaginary sea life, giant insects, skeletal remains, puzzling monsters, and deformed humans defy any simple categorization. Published by Tinto Press, with an introduction by Peter Poplaski, and a foreword by Kitchen. Designed by Ted Intorcio. The 170-page deluxe 10-inch x 10 inch hardcover reproduces more than 160 oddly compelling images.

    Praise for Creatures:

“Kitchen still draws like a motherfucker!” — NEIL GAIMAN

"Every drawing tells a story as madly vulnerable and deviantly brilliant (and as freaking funny) as the genius who translated them into elegantly vibrating, nightmare-worthy form…  Imagine if ELEGANCE was itself a being and imagine that you could split ELEGANCE open, stem to stern, and fill ELEGANCE’s beautiful corpse with the funniest, most vulnerable and most enchanting creatures—demons, jesters, bees, wizards, princes and monsters—known to humanity. Imagine if the beings of this twisted Seussian Kitchen-world adopted you as their very own child and told you a solid half of their demented secrets (keeping the very rudest and wickedest other half to themselves with a wink and a nod).  These are the unselfconsciously virtuosic drawings of master draughtsman Denis Kitchen—and even if these drawings are all secretly laughing at you, trust me. You will join them in a good laugh at your own expense and you’ll enjoy it, too.”—EMIL FERRIS (My Favorite Thing is Monsters)

“Kitchen’s Creatures from the Subconscious is a deluxe collection of drawings created directly in marker on chipboard. The drawings in this book represent a bit of a performance, “where [I] enter a kind of trance, and without forethought” to produce exquisitely detailed, bizarre but whimsical tableaus.” STEVE HELLER in Print Magazine

“After a half century of creativity and innovation, Denis Kitchen can still surprise and delight us. These marvelous, meticulous abstract drawings are an inspiring peek into a brain that just never stops. And best of all, they’re great fun. I can't stop looking at them!” — DERF BACKDERF (My Friend Dahmer)

"Such a thrill, looking at these strange and wonderful characters from the mind of Denis Kitchen—His pen and ink skills are top notch! I love the craftsmanship, the precise details, and the care he applied to each little weirdo. A delight for the eyes!”
—CAROL TYLER (Late Bloomer and You’ll Never Know trilogy)

"Kitchen’s automatic drawings, escapees from his unconscious, sometimes joyful, sometimes frightening, are a rare combination of spontaneity and precise draughtsmanship. There are no re-dos working with ink on chipboard. These images deliver immediate punch. They’re also cool—get them tattooed on your ass!” —MARK SCHULTZ (Xenozoic Tales)

"A deranged profusion of visual stimuli of the highest disorder.” — MONTE BEAUCHAMP (Blab! and The Blab Show)

About the artist: Denis Kitchen began his career as one of the original American “underground” cartoonists in the late 60s, then became a long-running publisher. He founded the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund in 1986, a non-profit organization that protects creators’ First Amendment rights. His literary and art agencies also represent numerous artists and estates. He co-wrote biographies on cartoonists Al Capp: A Life to the Contrary (Bloomsbury); The Art of Harvey Kurtzman (Abrams); Madness in Crowds: Harrison Cady (Beehive Books); and an overview, Underground Classics (also Abrams). Books about him include The Oddly Compelling Art of Denis Kitchen by Charles Brownstein (Dark Horse Books, 2010); Denis Kitchen’s Chipboard Sketchbook (2009); Kitchen Sink Press: The First 25 Years by Dave Schreiner (1994); and Everything Including the Kitchen Sink by Jon B. Cooke (2016).
