Mom's Homemade Comics No. 1 (1969) by Denis Kitchen.
Sub-titled "Straight From the Kitchen
to You!!," this early underground comic book is distinguished
on several levels: it is the only solo comic book produced
by cartoonist Denis Kitchen (who went on to become one of the
key underground publishers), it is the first comic book
published by Kitchen Sink Press (1969-1999) and, according to
Jay Lynch, it was only the 8th underground comic.
This first printing was published
in an edition of just 4,000 copies in Milwaukee, WI.
This edition is distinguished by three
notable features: it has a matte cover, a 49 cent cover price
and it includes several local advertisements. (A subsequent printing
by Berkeley's Print Mint has a slick cover, a 50 cent cover price
and includes no ads.) Of the 4,000 print run, 3,500 copies were
sold in Milwaukee outlets, while only 500 were distributed by
Gary Arlington in San Francisco. Thus it is an exceptionally
difficult underground comic to find, particularly in nice condition.
Our first printing copies, in near
mint/mint condition, are from the artist's private collection.
Autographed upon request.
