SMILE No. 2 (1971)

An unusual sideways format characterizes this underground comic. The lush painted cover by Jim Mitchell segues into his lead story. Mitchell edited the 3-issue Smile series and contributed most of the strips inside, including his nebbish character �Smile.� Mitchell�s promising career was cut short when he was busted and had to spend years in a Mexican prison (see his self-portrait as a prisoner in the �Famous Cartoonist Button Series� elsewhere in this web store).

Other contributors: Bill Lee, Peter Loft, Denis Kitchen, Bruce Walthers, Wendel Pugh and Don Glassford. Most of the strips first appeared in The Bugle-American, the Wisconsin-based alternative paper that uniquely featured full pages of underground comic strips.
