    SMILE No. 2 (1971)

An unusual sideways format characterizes this underground comic. The lush painted cover by Jim Mitchell segues into his lead story. Mitchell edited the 3-issue Smile series and contributed most of the strips inside, including his nebbish character Smile. Mitchells promising career was cut short when he was busted and had to spend years in a Mexican prison (see his self-portrait as a prisoner in the Famous Cartoonist Button Series elsewhere in this web store).

Other contributors: Bill Lee, Peter Loft, Denis Kitchen, Bruce Walthers, Wendel Pugh and Don Glassford. Most of the strips first appeared in The Bugle-American, the Wisconsin-based alternative paper that uniquely featured full pages of underground comic strips. (See a separate section of Steve Krupps Curio Shoppe for selected back issues of The Bugle.)

First printing. Besides the sideways format, slightly larger trim size than most undergrounds. Published by Kitchen Sink Press. Adults only. Condition is excellent, as scanned. $14
