WILL EISNER (1917-2005) • Original
Spirit art
“Hallowe’en Spirit of 1947: The Burning of
P.S. 43” page 7” (1947)
The immediate post-war period is regarding by
many as the pinnacle of Will Eisner’s Spirit art
style, and thus pages from this period are
especially sought by collectors. From 1946 to
1948, with some exceptions, Will Eisner was
writing, penciling and inking the stories
himself, with minimal assistance from others.
The brush stokes are particularly bold, the
attention to “feathering” (quick but carefully
delineated brushstrokes most notable in the
folding and shadows of clothing) is especially
masterful, and there is an overall greater
detail to detail. While Eisner was always a
workhorse, his schedule became much more
demanding in the late ‘40s and early ‘50s,
requiring that Spirit scripts, backgrounds and
even foregrounds increasingly be handled by
assistants.
Eisner’s own hand is evident in this final page
from his Hallowe’en story, an annual event, from
1947. As the Puritanical “Guardians” turn into
dogs, their close-ups reveal Eisner’s
unmistakable touch. While The Spirit is
absent from this page (he played a minor role in
most holiday stories) Hazel B. Witch is
present, and for dig lovers who also collect
comic art, they are attraction enough,
particularly when drawn in this prime period.
Note that the splash page for this October 26,
1947 sold at Heritage Auction in 2009
for nearly $9,000.
