Eisner’s Incredible Facts, Amazing Statistics
and Monumental Trivia. Page 27 (1974)
Eisner deploys
his finest expressive anatomy in this humorous page
depicting a group of middle-aged men reacting to
research about declining male longevity in a page from
Eisner’s rarely seen 1974 book incredible
Facts, Amazing Statistics, and Monumental Trivia.
The crisp line work showcases Eisner’s well-honed
draftsmanship and reveals him rediscovering playfulness
in his approach to drawing figures. Such wonderfully
expressive faces!
Inspired by
underground comix, newsstand humor magazines and book
collections of humor cartoons Eisner wrote,
illustrated and published a series of humor publications
prior to developing the Graphic Novel format in 1978.
This page is from an entry in that series,
which would eventually become known as "Gleeful Guides."
Size/Medium/Condition: Pen,
brush and ink with paste-up elements (mechanical
lettering). The original measures 8.25 x 11.5 inches on
clear vellum which has been lightly glued onto 10 by 13
inch heavy illustration board. An additional protective
vellum overlay is taped onto the board, which contains
some type corrections in Eisner’s handwriting. Some
discoloration of stats and rubber cement after nearly 50
years. But the linework is clean and uncompromised.
Overall excellent condition.
Provenance: The
Will Eisner Estate is exclusively represented by the
